Obituary For Nagaratnam Mylvaganam

It is with deep sorrow that we learned of the passing of Late Mr. Nagaratnam Mylvaganam, a dedicated teacher and a kind, honest, and friendly colleague to many of us.

Mr. N. Mylvaganam joined St. John’s College (SJC) in the late 1960s during the tenure of the former principal, Late Mr. K. Pooranampillai. He served the students of SJC faithfully under four successive principals. During the most difficult periods, when the school buildings were badly damaged and the college faced many challenges, he remained loyal, supportive, and cooperative with the college authorities.

He taught History, Social Studies, and Hinduism, and used creative methods to keep students interested in learning. He was a true motivator for younger generations. Principals and senior members of staff highly appreciated his discipline, dedication, and his ability to win the hearts and minds of the students of SJC.

Mr. Mylvaganam’s Monday morning Upper School assembly talks were especially memorable. He often spoke on current international and local affairs, which greatly influenced students. He encouraged young Johnians to read widely, including magazines such as Time, Illustrated Weekly of India, and Reader’s Digest, available in the college library. He also guided students to read English newspaper editorials and think independently when planning their future.

Many generations of students at SJC benefited greatly from his guidance, wisdom, and commitment.

As a colleague, he was cheerful, friendly, and always ready to help. He offered timely advice to those in need and actively expressed his views on Teachers’ Guild matters affecting staff. He was also a deeply religious person who lived and practiced the values of a true Hindu.

Although he is no longer with us, he will always be remembered by thousands of old boys, colleagues, and friends.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

May his soul attain eternal peace.

Sriharan
